Why every woman needs a menopause plan.

Women's sexuality is a complicated thing. It changes constantly as a woman progresses through puberty, adulthood and menopause. Change is the one constant in a woman's life, driven by the underlying dynamics of hormones and their effects upon a woman's body. Starting as early as forty years old estrogen levels begin to decrease in women triggering a range of symptoms. Hot flashes, sleeplessness, skipped periods, irritability are the common symptoms that women talk about when they seek a doctor's help for relief. The common symptoms frequently mask what is really going on as estrogen declines then ceases production; vaginal atrophy. The tissues that line the walls of the vagina dry out, become thin and eventually atrophy. This is true for all women. Left untreated vaginal atrophy usually results in loss of sexual function and leaves the vagina and bladder more prone to infection. Therefore, treating menopause means preventing vaginal atrophy.

Hot flashes means that vaginal atrophy has already begun. The symptoms that most women talk about, vaginal dryness, difficulty having sex and loss of libido are frequently attributed to yeast infections or temporary painful intercourse. In fact, these are the symptoms of vaginal atrophy which start off as subtle changes that gradually appear over time. Vaginal atrophy is progressive and the end result in the senior years is thin vaginal tissues that become prone to infections which impact overall health. Keeping a healthy vagina should be the priority of a menopause plan because vaginal atrophy is perhaps the most deleterious and longest lasting effect of menopause. Hot flashes, sleeplessness etc. are all serious things to experience but they are easiy treated by a range of medications depending on a woman's preference. The silent menace of menopause is that a woman's vagina begins to self-destruct as estrogen levels decrease and left untreated leads to progressively declining vaginal health.
